About Matt Lawson

Professional Statement

Matt Lawson, LPC, NCC is a licensed professional counselor and behavioral health specialist with over 15 years of experience across clinical therapy, health psychology, and behavior change. He holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Therapy with an emphasis in Health Psychology and brings a unique, integrative perspective shaped by his dual background in mental health and fitness.

Prior to his work as a therapist, Matt spent more than a decade as a certified personal trainer, supporting individuals in developing sustainable exercise habits, improving physical performance, and navigating the psychological barriers to long-term health behavior change. This foundation allows him to bridge the gap between clinical recommendations and real-world implementation, particularly within medically guided wellness and preventative care settings.

Matt is actively involved in the HealthSpan program at Vail Health, where he serves as a behavioral health specialist supporting patients enrolled in a comprehensive, longevity-focused model of care. In this role, he works closely with interdisciplinary teams to address motivation, adherence, stress management, and mindset factors that influence outcomes related to physical health, performance, and overall quality of life.

His clinical approach integrates evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, and principles from sports psychology. Matt is especially focused on helping individuals move beyond all-or-nothing thinking, build psychological flexibility, and align daily behaviors with long-term health and life goals.

Matt values collaborative, team-based care and brings a calm, structured, and practical approach to supporting patients across the healthspan continuum.
