About Kathleen McChesney

Professional Statement

Dr. Katie McChesney,  MA, PsyD, has over 25 years of providing individual and group psychotherapy services to young and older adults, including medical professionals, international active-duty service members, veterans, high ranking officers/individuals with top secret security clearance, and their dependents.  She is PsyPact credentialed and has both domestic and international experience in healthcare education, policy development, and training of fellow healthcare providers.

Areas of expertise include physical and psychological trauma, adjustment to injury, illness, and disease, recovery from grief/loss, as well as management of acute and chronic pain.  She treats anxiety, mood and somatic disorders, and  has additional clinical expertise of health and wellness, applying evidence-based mind-body practices to manage anxiety, prevent burnout, and mitigate trauma exposure in the line of work.

As a former Senior Instructor and Clinical Psychologist for the UC Health/CU Anschutz Medical Campus’ Burn and Frostbite Center,  she served as a Consultant-Liaison for the Department of Psychiatry. She treated complex medical and psychiatric cases in both inpatient and outpatient settings.  She teaches interdisciplinary medical colleagues, interns, residents and fellows on specialty topics associated with trauma, pain, substance use disorders, mindfulness, hypnosis, and wellness.  She has served as an internship supervisor for clinical doctoral psychology interns through the department of Family Medicine at the University of Colorado. 

As former director of the Pain Behavioral Health Clinic at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, she specialized in the treatment of service members, retirees, and their dependents with polytrauma, illness, injury, disease and chronic pain.  She co-developed the US Navy's first Functional Restoration Pain Program for active-duty service members and served as adjunct faculty for the USUHS in offering education to medical and dental students, residents and fellows. She has contributed to a number of publications in the field of pain psychology, routinely consults with healthcare providers in multidisciplinary settings on complex patient cases and was awarded Associate Master Clinician at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego in 2019.
